Sculpted in Shadows is a Melbourne photography practice devoted to the oldest subject in art: the human form in light.

The work borrows from the baroque painters: a single source of light, deep shadow, and a subject given the time and space to be entirely themselves. No over-lit sets, no formulaic poses. Every session is built around the person in front of the camera.

Boudoir sessions are about confidence: imagery you'll keep for yourself, or for someone worth showing. Fine art nude sessions treat the body as sculpture, made only ever by mutual design. Portrait and editorial work rounds out the practice, from painterly character studies to aerial concept shoots.

Every model works from a signed release, every gallery is published by consent, and anonymity is always an option. Trust is the first material in every image; the light comes second.

We talk about what draws you to the work, what you want made, and where your boundaries sit. Nothing is assumed, everything is agreed.

Design

Moodboards, wardrobe, light plans. Each session is sketched before a single frame is made, so the shoot day is calm and certain.

The session

Unhurried, private, and directed throughout. The release form is signed together on the day, and you never hold a pose that doesn't feel like yours.

The art

Hand-edited frames delivered as a private gallery, with print and album options. Nothing is published anywhere without your written consent.

  • A conversation first. Before anything is booked we talk about what you want made and where your boundaries sit. Nothing is assumed.
  • A plan, not a surprise. Wardrobe, mood and light are sketched before the day, so the session itself is calm.
  • A preparation guide for your kind of session, sent in advance. Read them here.
  • A release you control clause by clause. You decide where images may appear, and you can decline any use and still have your session.
  • Anonymity, if you want it. Never named, never tagged, never attributed. Your choice, recorded in writing.
  • Direction throughout. You will never be left to work out a pose on your own.

Two hours is the session, not a stopwatch, and nobody is stopped mid-frame. A few minutes over is ordinary and is never charged for. A further hour is A$150, best arranged when you book so the light and the location can be planned around it. Editorial and concept work is quoted individually, since those days run longer and are built around an idea rather than a package. Additional images, prints and albums are available afterwards, never a condition of the session.

The questions everyone has

I've never done anything like this. Do I need experience?

None at all. Almost nobody arrives with any. You are directed through every pose, from where to put your hands to where to look. Nothing is left for you to work out on your own, and there is no such thing as doing it wrong. What actually happens on the day walks through a whole session, start to finish.

Who will see my photographs?

Only you, unless you decide otherwise in writing. Nothing is published, printed, entered into a competition or shown to anyone without the specific permissions you tick on the model release, and you can decline any of them and still have your session. Anonymity is always available: if you choose it, your images are never captioned, tagged or attributed.

What should I wear, and what do I need to bring?

Wardrobe is discussed and planned before the day, so you never arrive wondering. Bring more than you think you need. Pieces you already feel good in beat anything bought for the occasion. Simple, well-fitting lingerie, a favourite shirt, a sheet or a length of fabric all photograph beautifully. Nudity is never assumed and never required. How long is a session, and when do I see the images?

Two hours, unhurried, with time to change and to look at frames as we go. Your gallery of hand-edited images follows within about two weeks.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes. You are welcome to bring a friend or partner for the whole session or just the start. Many people find it steadies the nerves; others prefer the privacy. Both are fine.

What if I change my mind about an image later?

Write and say so. Future publication of any specific image stops on request. That is written into the release rather than being a favour. Anything already printed or published can't be recalled, which is why the permissions are agreed carefully up front.

What if we run over time?

Anything longer than that is a different session rather than a longer one, and is quoted individually.

Either way you receive the same fifteen finished photographs. More time means more to choose from, and further images are available afterwards if you want them.

Do you retouch?

Lightly, and toward how you actually look on a good day: skin is evened, distractions removed, light shaped. Your body is not reshaped unless you specifically ask, and you can ask for less as easily as more.
